Romney vs. Perry (Please respond by Friday, September 30)

As the Republican candidates continue to debate who would be the best individual to represent the party in next year's election vs. President Obama, I have included a brief video of the debate on Thursday, September 22.

Romney vs. Perry debate

After watching this video, please share your reactions. What do you think about Romney and Perry? Who would you say is the front runner currently to receive the nomination of the Republican Party? Who would you vote for? Share your honest thoughts.

I have not been hearing too much on the running between Perry and Romeny and have not known what the major differences are between the two of them. After watching this video and hearing that Perry is basically a supporter of illiegal immigration and wants the children of illegal immigrants to be allowed to go to school for in state tuition, I really do not like his mind-set. Our country is already going bankrupt and has a high-rate of unemployment so by saying that illegal immigrants can pay in state tuition is like saying we dont care if youre legal or not, just come to our country, take our jobs and money and we'll give you a nice education. That is not right. Although I know that the children of illegal immigrants are young and did not have a say in coming to our country illegally, what their parents did was still wrong and if they want to live in this country and have in state tuition and give their children a decent education, then they should become a LEGAL immigrant and become a LEGAL citizen. I am completly against illegal immigration and do not by any means agree with Perry on this matter. I think that his thoughts on this could cause him to fall behind in votes in his campaign so I think that Romney might have a slightly better chance but that is only based on what I learned in this video. If I were old enough to vote, based off of what I have just learned about each candidate, I would definitely vote for Romney rather than Perry.

In correspondence with Andi, I too have not heard much about it but according to the latest polls on the news Romney is the front runner for the Republican Party. Romney seems to be more moderate on some issues more than others but also a fiscal conservative and one of the most experienced buisness men in the field. Perry seems to be the candidate that the Tea Party favors. I disagree with the stand Perry has on illegal immigration on in state tution, I do not feel that it is fair to give illegal immigrants the same rights of in state tution that the people who are legal and the people that are attending college in state are given, which is why I would vote for Romney.

Politics in today’s society has gotten very out of hand. It seems like all you tend to hear about are the arguments and the frauds in politics and honestly it is getting us no where today. Most Americans in today’s society don’t want to deal with politics for this specific reason. They don’t want to hear these arguments but instead they want to hear the ways you are going to try to make a country a better place to live. This is the reason that I found this video about Romney and Perry very annoying. Through the clip that I saw they were going off at each other and playing a “he said she said” game. I personally don’t want to hear their bickering, but instead I want to hear them talk more about what they are going to do for this country. On another note I think that Romney has the best chance at winning the primary elections due to the fact that Andi said about Perry supporting illegal immigration with tuition. Many people don’t support this and I think this will greatly hurt him when elections come along. My opinion, on the other hand, is indifferent. I personally don’t know enough about the two candidates to voice my opinion on who I believe should win this election. However I believe with more research on the two I will soon form my own opinion.

I too, also agree with Grace. Both candidates are only focused on using each other's words as amunition for their next argument. Because there not concentrated on persuading others with their plans to improve our government and nation, I think that they are both not well-suited to run for the Republicans. However, I do believe that Romney has a slight advantage because he didn't shoot himself in the foot by saying he supported illegal immigrants coming to the states and receiving in state tuition like Perry did. I, personally, am against illegal immigrants coming from foreign countries because it isn't fair to the natural-born citizens that they are receiving the same benefits and rights. If they were to be legal immigrants, on the other hand, then I would be okay with that. Despite his advantage, I wouldn't vote for either of them because they don't seem to be too focused on their promotion of ideas and plans of improvement and only on who can respond with a better comeback.

Like a lot of students already said, Romney and Perry are relatively new to me and I will probably form a more in depth opinion of them as time goes on and elections become closer. Though I am not sure if I would like either to become President, I believe that Romney is in the lead with regards to the Republican party. I feel that Perry is nonsensical concerning issues such as the illigal immigration issue that was discussed in the video. If the children are legal but their parents are not, then obviously the child should still be allowed the education due to the fact that they are a citizen of the United States. Quite frankly, I do not even understand why he is bringing this up because first of all, it is a simple understanding that the legal children have the right to the education, and secondly, how would the government even know that the parents were illegal immigrants? His arguement seems unintelligent and confusing to me. As of right now, the one I would probably support is Romney, though I have not fully concluded that I would like to support him until I know more about him and his proposals.

After watching this video, I find myself very annoyed. I just wish that there could be a politician that cares more about issues and getting things done, instead of bashing their possible running mates. All our country does anymore is fight, argue, and you can't see the positive side of anything. The way I look at it is, we should be happy that we have a government that cares about our needs and wants to protect us, right? But, how many people do you think actually feel this way? Not many because every time you turn on the news you see someone bashing someone else. It is so pointless and it doesn't get anything accomplished. To have to pick between Romney and Perry I feel that I do not know enough about them to make my decision. Based on just the facts from the video though, I would pick Romney. This is because I do not agree with Perry's issues on illegal immigration and I feel that he could not defend himself well. I think our country, with all of its problems, needs to worry about our citizens first. As others have mentioned the public seems to like Romney but I need to do more research to make my overall decision.

I have not heard much about Perrry or Romeny. The inly thing I know is that Perry is supporting children of illegal immigrants to go to school for the in state tuition. As we discussed in class, the only illegal immigrants allowed to send their children to school paying in state tuition are the people with children born in the United States and are citizens. I believe that the government should look at who is paying for the education. If a child who was born in the United States wants to put themselves through school by recieving scholarships or working at the same time, they are a citizen and should have that right. However if the parents, who are not citizens, are paying for the education then they should not receve the same rights. They do not have the same responcibilities as citizens such as paying taxes, therefore they should not recieve the same priveledges. Illegal immigration is a problem in the United States if people come to the United States they should be willing to become a citizen especially if their children are citizens. Allowing the immigrants to have these privledges is not going to fix the problem.

I fully support Romney and believe that he will receive the republican vote for president. Perry is overly opinionated and not in very good ways. USUALLY I agree with what the republican candidates say but Perry's stance on illegal immigrants and education is terrible. Our national debt is already at such a high number that any more money that we are giving away to someone that is not even included under our Constitution is just a bad idea. Illegal immigrants should be prevented in every way possible, and giving their children cheap tuition to college is just more of a reason for them to join the States. Instead of helping them out and letting their children be treated as equals to our completely legal families we should be helping them gain citizenship or helping prevent them from coming to the United States.
Overall I believe that Romney has better ideas and more of a chance of winning the republican election. I do not agree with Perry's stance on this issue and I do not believe that he will make a good president of our lovely country.

Along with many other girls, this video annoyed me. Like Andi and Victoria said, I haven't really heard too much about either candidate and I am unaware of what each is bringing to the table. However, if I had to vote right now, I would choose Romney. I do not agree with Perry's support of in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants. I understand that some immigrants are trying to get the best life for their child. That's fine. Then the parents should be legalized. It is not fair to citizens of America, especially ones that go to colleges in a different state that they reside in. Like Nichole said in class today, the only thing that illegal immigrants do is take and take and take, but never give back. Although I do not support in-state tuition for illegal immigrants' children, I do believe that it is a state issue rather than a federal one. From watching this video, it seems like both Romney and Perry have alot of improving to do. I agree with Grace in that the nations doesn't need anymore arguing and disagreement between government officials. We need a strong government, with people who know what they are doing, who can help dig us out of debt, and provide for the common good of the people.

I think Romney and Perry are both really funny guys. I was incredibly entertained by the way they were jabbing at each other during the debate. Other than that, I do not know much about them, and therefore, can't make a decision on my opinion of either one of them. Perry has said/done many controversial things. I can't believe he wants to give in state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants. If the children were born here and are in turn U.S. citizens, then it would be completely acceptable. But giving benefits to the illegal children of illegal immigrants? That is completely unreal! It sends a message to all those thinking about illegally moving to the U.S. It makes it seem like we'll let them come over and basically do whatever they want and receive the benefits of citizens. Because of Perry's controversial statements on illigal immigration and forcing girls to get the HPV vaccine, I think that Romney is the front-runner for the Republican Party. I do not know enough about either of them to be comfortable to trust them as president. I would need to learn more about their stands on certain issues before I could choose which one to vote for.

I think that both of the two candidates are rather disappointing because they seem to concentrate more on smearing each others reputation than stating their policies and legislation that they would enact if they were elected president. It astonished me how childish both of them were, basically getting into an argument over what each said in his books. This is not what I am looking in a political candidate. I think that if a political candidate is serious about "putting America on the right path to reform", then they should have the discipline to extend professional courtesy to their opponents. However, having to choose the front runner, I believe that as of this moment, it is Romney because he seems to embody the type of candidate favored by Republicans; religious, against Obama-care, and firmly opposed to illegal immigration. I also believe that Romney's apparent lead was also helped by Rick Perry's blunder concerning the HPV vaccination. The outrage that was produced by this legislation delivered a blow to Perry's ratings. If I had to vote for someone, it would be Rick Perry. Though I vehemently disagree with some of his policies, I like his direction with health care and job reform. I think that his plan on creating jobs is more sustainable and realistic than Romney's, and that his health care includes the middle class in its policies.

To be honest I have not looked into or heard much about the republican presidental campaigns for the 2012 elections next November. From the information on this video my view would be that Romney would receive the nomination for the Republican party. Although I do agree with Perry and his views of illegal immigrants children receiving instate tution cost and education. I do believe that he has hurt himself by bringing forth this issue in that a majority of Americans are strongly against illegal immigration. I think that the United States Founding Fathers created this country with the idea that I was a refuge place for outsiders to come and get the most out of what they put forth effort into. Yes it is wrong for illegal immigrants to be in the States but if their child was born in the US and has worked very hard to receive scholarships and such that will pay for the instate tution I think that it should be available to them. I do think Perry also hurt himself when he brought up the vaccine for girls issue, which could add to the reasons why he could lose the campaign. I think I probably would vote for Romney but still at that point be considering if I had made the right choice. Immigrantion along with many other political and social issues at the forefront of American politics and needs to be taken care of immediatly either one way or another.

This video clip provides very little information on the positions and opinions of either of the politicians. The reporters say more than Perry and Romney, and even what they voice is very vague and unspecific. I believe that Romney is currently the front runner currently to receive the nomination of the Republican Party because he does not support the controversial issue of in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants that is endorsed by Perry. I believe that if the children of these immigrants are citizens of the U.S. because they were born and raised in this country, then they should qualify to receive in-state tuition just as other American students who are citizens typically do. However, if these students are not citizens of the United States then I think that they should not qualify to receive in-state tuition because it is a waste of state revenue and can lead to unnecessary debts for state governments. Romney also seems to be more popular among the people due to his traditional, conservative, and Christian viewpoints. Like Julie and Grace said, I do not think that I really have enough information about either candidate to vote in their support.

I think there are many pros and cons to both Romney and Perry. I don’t agree with some of Romney’s economic plans, and I feel that some of Perry’s plans are too intrusive on individual rights. It currently seems like Perry is more popular, but that Romney would have a better chance of winning against Obama. While I agree with what other people said about Perry’s stance on the illegal immigrants and schooling, I do believe that some action needs to be taken with this issue. Also, like Caroline said, I feel as if Perry made a bad choice in bringing up controversial issues such as this and the mandatory vaccine. However, like everyone else said, I would need to know more about each candidate before I made any decisions. While I don’t know a lot about either Perry or Romney, I would definitely vote for one of them over the other GOP candidates.

I do not know much about what either of these candidates stands for, but after watching this video I do not think that I like either of them very much. First of all, I do not like all of the jabs that they kept making at each other about their books and health care plans and what not. I think that they should stop pointing out what the other person is not doing and start getting their own plans straight. Secondly, disagree with where Perry stands as far as illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are illegal; they’re not allowed to be in this country, so I don’t think that their children should have in-state tuition because they’re really not supposed to live there. Even though I don’t understand how in-state tuition can be extended to the children of illegal immigrants (because they are ILLEGAL), I think that the states should have the power to deal with this sort of issue. Since this is an issue regarding the school systems, I do think that it is a power reserved to the states under the 10th Amendment.
Right now, I think that Romney is the front runner to receive the nomination. This is a pretty close election but, since many of Perry’s views are very controversial, I think that I would probably vote for Romney. I do not like either of them very much, but I support Romney’s policies more then Perry’s.

After hearing some of the main points President Obama described in his State of the Union speech, do you believe he is taking America in the right direction?
