In response to some of the latest chatter about the 2012 presidential election, I want you to read a recent article published by CNN.
Republican Candidates
What are your thoughts? Is the 2012 Republican field that pathetic? Which of these individuals do you think could potentially defeat President Obama?

Well, although I think the Republican Party candidates may not be as strong as in years pastand they may not be the absolute best people in the running, but I would pick them over Obama any day. I would not go as far as to say that the Republican Field is "pathetic" or a "joke", I would simply say that it could be better. I think that overall Romney is deffinitely ahead of the game in comparison to Perry who seems to be lacking ideas and whose very few ideas are completly unnecessary and not well thought out. Although Romney may not be the best Republican in the nation to be running, I deffinitely would not say that the Republican field of election is pathetic. Obama is facing a lot of low approval from the citizens which could be a strong boost to the votes towards the Republican Party. I think it's time for a change. No pun intended. By change, I mean get Obama out of office. Yes, I have more Republican views but I'm not completely against certain beliefs of the Democratic Party. I actually support some of 'their' beliefs. But I'm sick of Obama trying to tax everyone and putting our country in debt. I think that getting someone new in office would benefit our country and would hopppeeefullyyy boost our economy.
I personally think that James Carville went way over the top with the way he is portraying the Republican candidates. I agree with Andi, they are not as good as they have before but the way our country is right now, I highly doubt people are going to go vote for Obama again. Why would we? He really has done nothing. I don't know how Obama would get the majority of Americans to vote for him again, what will be his slogan for running this upcoming year? It cant be "Change" because we all know he is incapable of doing that. At this point, I just want someone else in office, of course I want it to be of the Republican party but I would be ok if it was a Democrat, basically anyone but Obama, that just goes to show how bad he is. I realize another Democrat will not be running this election, and trust me, I am ok with that, so how about we all just vote for Mitt Romney and be happy. Romney seems to be the best Republican candidate who potentially could get us out of some of the major problems in our country.
I believe that James Carville is hilarious. I 100% agree that the Republican candidates have butchered their chances of being elected as the Republican candidate for president. Perry is clearly out of the running because of his incoherency and lack of ability to perform speeches and hold intelligent conversations. Therefore, I highly doubt no one would vote for someone like him to run the country. Moreover, Carville's depiction of the Republican field as a "joke" is not an understatement. Out of those candidates, Romney has the upperhand and will most likely be the only competition that Obama has to worry about. However, I personally don't think either are suitable to run a country. Obama is continually getting criticism for his jobs plan, which is only hurting his chances of being re-elected next year. He hasn't really done too many things for this country. I know that he has inherited the debt and economic turmoil from past presidencies, but that should only fuel him to make the "change" he promised in his '08 campaign. So, if you ask me, I feel that Romney might beat Obama despite the weak Republican field, which means that were gonna be in even more serious trouble for the next 4 years whether Obama wins the presidency or not.
In comparison to what Maggie said, Mr. Shannon I'm sure you knew how AWFUL I would find this article to be when you chose it. I found Carville's arguments to be slanderous and severely lacking in factual evidence. He based his article on his own opinion as a Democrat with a few sprinklings of occasional facts. He's a democrat! Of course he is going to believe or want to believe that the Republican candidates are a joke! As a Democrat, he wants Obama to win and he is trying ensure that by tarnishing the names of the Republican candidates. It is true that Perry and Bachmann have occasionally said things that may not have been entirely accurate or appropriate at the given time, but that does not mean they are completely out of the running for Presidency! Also, Carville portrayed Romney as a little girlie baby man! That is just rude! I don't understand how anyone could view this article as actually informative. I find it to be similar to a push poll. Carville is putting forth this information that may or may not actually be true in order to persuade the American public from making the wise decision of voting Republican. I would vote for every single one of these candidates over Obama. My pick for the election would be Chris Christie because I feel like he would be most suited to bring us out of this economic time of disagreement. But since he is not running, I think Romney has the most potential of winning the Republican nomination for the 2012 election. Also, I think that everyone of the potential candidates could beat Obama in the upcoming election. It is too soon to count the Republican party out as a "joke." The GOP is not pathetic and they are ready to take office and fix what is wrong with this country.
Needless to say the only word that came to my mind reading James Carville's words was arrogant. I do agree that the Republican field is weak and could be a lot better, but I think Carville blew it completely out of proportion in a smart alec way. Honestly I just did not like his tone. Many of the candidates are still relatively new to me, so my opinion of them is still forming. I found it out of line when Carville started to poke fun at Perry's tiredness, but unfortunately that is what Americans like him will do. Perry must be dedicating countless hours to campaigning already. I am sure Carville has no right to make fun of him because he probably spends a lot of friday nights alone at home watching lifetime. As for Romney, I think i need to learn more about him. This article does a great job bashing him, yet it does absolutely nothing to provide the positive things he has done. I feel that he may need more experience. Going off the experience note, Obama was also very experienced. He did not even finish a term in the Senate before he started to campaign for President. I believe if Palin was not vice for McCain, then he probably would have beat Obama. Also, what has Obama really done for this country? His whole campaign was about change. Well, where is that change? I was reading the comments from the article and one comment was discussing the fact that it seems to be a coincidence that finnnaallly (Mr. Shannon I hope you appreciate my multiple letters) he is coming out with a jobs plan so close to his campaigning time. In closing, I find it embarrassing that this country seems to have to resort to picking a candidate that is better than the rest, but far from the best.
I think that this article, stating one man's opinion of the Republican party's presidential nominees, has to some degree been over exagerated yet also shows the weakness of the selection for the up and coming election. It is obvious that James Carville has a very strong opinion towards the shortcoming of the Republican party and it's ability to produce noteworthy canidates. He makes this opinion of his very clear when he cruelly critizes each canidate. Even though I agree with freedom of speech and everything, I think that James has not been able to control himself to be mature. Yes the Republicans don't have the finest pick of the crop this year but they have respectable canidates that have worked for their names to be known throughout the party, maybe not all with the best reputation. I feel that Mitt Romney has the best chance to defeat President Obama, with Obama's low approval ratings there may be a very good chance.
First off, how old are you Carville?? Seriously. This article took arogance to a whole new level. I do agree that the Republican party is weak right now, but to say it's "pathetic" is a bit dramatic. The "joke" is not the 2012 Repubican field, it's the President. With Obama's low approval ratings, I think anything is possible right now. I believe that, between Romney and Perry, Romney has the potential to beat Obama. Perry's ideas, like Andi said, just seem unreasonable and not well thought out at all. I feel that the Republicans will gain popularity since Obama has not effecively fulfilled his promises, like "Change" and "Hope." The only thing that has changed is the growing amount of negative money the U.S. has. That's change alright.
Like I said, I do not think that this Republican field is as strong as it has been in the past, however, I feel that Romney can do more for our country than Obama has been doing. To say it's pathetic is just completely unnecessary.
This article is insulting in so many ways! Whether Republican or Democrat, all I want to say to this guy is do you think you could do better?! Honestly I find the people that think this is funny (sorry Maggie) are just rude because whether it is your party or not, it is insulting people that obviously have some good qualities to be considered able to run for president. To all those people, what gives you the right to judge? This is what I hate most about politics because everyone is always trying to be negative! If this guy really cares about politics then go and do something that is going to help people instead of writing pointless articles that frankly don’t do anything! Now, I am not saying that I love these candidates and agree with everything they say. But, were all human we make mistakes, we say dumb things, and people talk about us behind our backs. Like I said before though, all these people have good qualities to them. Do we really know what they are though? I would say most people don’t because all the media and people like my “friend” James here only focus on the bad. Maybe this is a reason our country has so many issues or why we are at the highest disapproval rate in Congress right now…. To compare these candidates to past Presidents or important people in history is just flat out a waste of time and energy. No two people are the same and those are not fair comparisons. And hasn’t each president made a mistake before? Oh no not at all, only these people have issues. And I would like to ask this man how he feels about Obama. Do you agree with him on everything he has done while being in office?! I am sure he finds the idea of spending over 400 billion dollars to get Americans working again an excellent idea! Some of the comments this man made were really below the belt. What I find comical is that he insults Perry saying he is not good at giving speeches. Maybe he should call up the people that write Obama’s. But I won’t say anything further on that because I will not act like Mr. Carville. All in all I do not find this Republican field to be pathetic, but I don’t think they have found the right person to represent them yet. This makes me think of Chris Christie. He is a very well spoken man who works hard to make change, he stands up for his beliefs and family, and tends to not focus on the negative bashing of other politicians. For me that is what a real president should be. While we were discussing him in class today it was sad to talk about how people would have a problem with his weight. In the recent interview we all watched he himself say he is like a big teddy bear. So maybe to relieve his stress he likes comfort food. No one should have a problem with that! Christie would be my choice for who could beat Obama, but sadly this won’t be happening. If I had to pick I would say the front runner looks the Romney and Cain is apparently making way. To say if they could beat Obama or not, well I need more time and information.
I personally don’t agree with Carville when he says he thinks that the republican party is pathetic. However I do believe that they are weak and not the best people fit for the job of president. None of them seem to be responsible or ready for this position. It seems like all people are hearing form the republican party these days is fighting. For example the two top runners, Romney and Perry, disagree on many things, and most Americans don’t want to hear that during this time. Our economy is doing horrible and we want to hear about strong plans to get us out of this mess. We haven’t heard enough of this from the republican party. However on the other side, many people don’t like Obama either. Obama hasn’t done much for our country and people want change. They need people to act on these issues and do something about, and neither candidates from these parties seem like they can do it. Moreover, if someone were to beat Obama for this race I believe that it would be Romney. Romney seems to be the most popular out of the republican party, and many people like how he is a traditional republican. However, in the long run, whoever wins this election is going to need to step up to the plate and work extremely hard.
I think that this was a very interesting article. James Carville is obviously an opinionated man and I think that his claim that the Republican Party is “pathetic” and a “joke” is very arrogant of him. Although the Republican candidates for president this election are pretty weak, I would not go so far as Carville did in this article. Since Barack Obama’s approval ratings are low and seem to be getting lower everyday, most people think that the Republican Party has a good chance at winning the election despite their meager candidates. I also believe that a Republican candidate could possibly have a chance at beating Obama in the election. However, I have to disagree with those people who think that Obama has made no change at all over the past few years he’s been in office and I think that is a mistake to say that Obama has done nothing just because his approval ratings are low. Just to name a few things, Obama saved more than 1 million jobs by single-handedly preventing the collapse of the automakers, has brought 100,000 troops home from war, and he has put record tax cuts for the middle class in place and cut $200 billion in corporate welfare. Obama has also done remarkable things for women. He has placed two young, female justices on the Supreme Court, which I think is pretty cool and is something that we, as an all- girl’s school, should appreciate. But getting back to the Republican candidates, I think that Mitt Romney would probably have the best chance at beating Obama in the election. Romney seems to be the strongest out of the weak Republican candidates and therefore has the biggest change of winning the upcoming election.
This article is downright absurd. There is not a single nice thing that i could say about this article. Carville was using absolutely no factual evidence when he flat out bashed every single republican candidate. Sure none of the current candidates are as wonderful as Chris Christie BUT they still each have their strengths! Yes Bachman and Perry sometimes don't watch their mouths, but that does not mean that they are not strong candidates still! And face it, any one of these people could do a better job in office than Obama. Carville honestly just wrote this article to turn an arrogant eye to the republicans and to make Obama look better. Like Carolyn said, this is exactly like a push poll. Except for this poll is for sure not working on any republican that i know. Romney is successful and has great ideas for our nation, Bachman has the strong female leadership that we need, Cain actually has a strong following and great ideas, and Perry...well he is an idiot...but he is not as horrible as this article makes him out to be! I believe that every single one of these candidates does not deserve the scrutiny and arrogance that this article gives them. Carville if you think that you could do any better (which I know that you cannot along with any other democrat in our nation) then you can run for office. This article is grotesque, and I hate it.
I agree with what most people have said (not including Maggie). I think that while the Republican field may be weaker than it has been over the past years, it is not completely pathetic. James Carville is blowing the negative aspects of these candidates out of proportion by comparing them to historical Republicans. While the Republican Presidential candidates are not necessarily very strong or popular with the people, President Obama currently has very low approval ratings. I think that while the Republican candidates are not the best, any one of them may have a better chance of winning than Obama because none of them have had an opportunity for the American people to dislike them over a four year period. Out of all the Republican nominees I think that Romney and Perry have the best chances of being nominated, and out of these two, I think that Romney definitely has a better chance of beating Obama. The 2012 Presidential election will be close, and in the end, it might come down to who American voters dislike less.
First off, I want to say that even thought I identify myself mostly with the republican party, I thought that this article was a little humorous because of its reality check. I believe that the Republican party has under represented itself with less than formidable candidates, who have not been the most stellar public stewards. If what James Carville is true, then being 49th in job creation and that is only because the other state had been completely trashed by a monster hurricane is utterly miserable and not a good thing for a potential presidential candidate (Romney) who has the job of getting this country back on track and create more jobs. However, that being said, I do not think that the Republican field is pathetic, I would say that they are highly mediocre. Not only do they lack charisma, a must in a presidential election, but they also lack a rallying point to get people excited about this election and believe that the next person in office will make a difference. However, I also do not think that Obama will win this election. Not only are his approval ratings sank to the 40th percentile, the unemployment percentage is stuck right at 9.1%, and that percentage does not discriminate and includes blacks who voted for Obama. In fact, it won't be the Republicans, per se, who beat Obama, the economy will beat him. When his voters start losing their jobs, and are unable to provide for their family, they are faced with a question. "I voted for this man because he said he would turn this economy around and create new jobs. IF he can't do that in four years, and not only that the economy is getting worse, why should I think that he can make any more difference in the next four years." Whoever will be the Republican candidate I don't know, but I can't see the same people who voted for Obama in the last election voting for him again. But still, I think that the candidates are far from ideal and "to have to resort to picking a candidate that is better than the rest, but far from the best." is bad for this country and bad for its people. (PS thank to Katie J for that quotation at the end. That sentence really suns up my entire feelings about this presidential race)
I think that Carville went too far with his descriptions of the Republican candidates and his comparisons with other politicians. I can't believe he called the Republican candidates 'a joke' and 'pathetic.' I'm sorry, but at this point, Obama seems pretty pathetic to me. While I understand, and agree, that the Republican party may not have the most ideal people running and they sometimes say and do stupid things, the Republican candidates have a very good chance at beating Obama, with how low his approval ratings have become. I think that nearly all of the Republican candidates could potentially beat Obama in the election next year. While I would like Christie to be the Republican candidate, since he isn't running, I hope Romney is the Republican nominee. While all of the Republican candidates have a good chance, Romney is most likely to win. I like Perry, but too many people think he is incompetent and stubborn, thanks to Carville and the rest of the media, so he probably won't be nominated. Bachmann is great, but I still don't think the Republican party is ready for, or will choose a woman. I also really like Cain, but I feel his isn't well-known enough to win the nominee. And who cares if Cain can't make an 'edible pizza?' That's the least of our country's problems right now. This article really annoyed me, because Carville seems to be completely ignorant to who these people are and what they believe in. I strongly believe that any of the Republican candidates are preferable to Obama and could easily beat him in the 2012 election.
The Republican Party as a whole is being put down because of a few people represented the governemnt. I believe that the United States has seen many candidates more worthy of the Presidential vote than the people running or Barack Obama. However, I do believe Perry or Romney do have some interesting ideas about turning the United States government around, and that a fresh point of view and fresh ideas can only help the economy. For the past few years Americans have seen the job Obama has done in office after his campaign for "Change" in the 2008 election. Obviously Obama's approach to improving the economy has not worked because the only thing he really did was get the country into more debt. Romney is in the best position to defeat Obama in the 2012 election because of Obama's low approval rating. I also feel that even though the Republican party is not as strong as it used to be, especially considering the hard times the country is in, the only thing pathetic is people putting down the ones who could be the next President and are in the position of fixing the economy. Calling the Republican party a joke is not fair to those who have continually worked the help the economy. In the end the President has a tough and important job and the winner of the 2012 election has a lot to prove to the American people. As of right now it doesn't seem like the candidates have what it takes.
