Due to the recent death of former Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi, much debate has been circulating through the media about what kind of future the country of Libya will have moving foward. Please read the following article which will provide you with some background into his death as well as questions about the future.
Future Challenges in Libya
Now it is your turn to voice your opinions. What kind of future do you think this country has? Do you think we should be concerned about this country succeeding in their attempts to revamp their government moving forward? How much should the United States be involved in the rebuilding efforts? Should the rebuilding efforts be more in control of the Libyan people or NATO?

I am also concerned for the future of Libya. They have gone through many bad things with war and have Gadhafi and now that Gadhafi has been killed, although celebration may seem necessary to them, they are reaqlly going to have to decide that they want to do next to fix their problems. The NTC is going to have a bbig job in treating the thousands of people who were injured during the fighting and rebuild and stabalize their country while making a new government, a strong and stable democracy. I think the United States should be concerned with the state of Libya's needs to an extent. I think that our country should do just enough so that Libya is still an ally with us so that we can get the resources we need, but we should not go over there and completly take over and cause risks to our citizens or take a chance on ruining our stable relationship with Libya.I feel that NATO should still be involved but may not have to have complete power in the rebuildingof the Libyan government. I think it is important for the people of Libya to have a say in what they want and have their voices be heard.
Although the country of Libya has come to a peaceful and safe time after Moammar Gadhafi's death I think that Libya is in for a rough journey on their way to a democratic government. I would have to agree with Maggie and Andi that I am concerned for the future of Libya. Coming out of a war time economy people will have to adjust back to not only their regular, professional life styles but also they must try to configure a whole new government which everyone will then accept. From looking at the United States history of building a government we can see that it is not an easy process that takes just a year or two. I think the United States should offer our help in the building process of the new government, but we should in no way force our presence upon them. I think that the United States should also step in to assist those who are injured because those people need to be taken care of immediately and the United States has the ability to help in large amounts. I do think that it is going to be hard for the Libya government to take all of the fire arms away from those who were previously defending themselves against the Gadhafi government. Obviously there are still going to be small gangs or Gadhafi loyalists who will create trouble for the new government. I think the rebuilding efforts should be shared between the Libyan people and NATO. Neither sole group can reconstruct the whole country on their own but could possibly do a fair job when working together. Each has unique assets that can be used to create a government perfect for the newly liberated country.
I am also concerned with the future of Libya. Building a completely new government from scratch after 42 years under dictatorship will be a huuugge challenge. The NTC will have to be very detailed and careful in forming this government; they need to make sure that all groups have equal rights, especially the Islamists, since they were so oppressed under Gadhafi. I think that the U.S. should help, but only with certain things. Since the NTC has an overwhelmingly great amount of fixing to do, the U.S. can lift some weight off the NTC's shoulders by helping the injured people. We shouldn't really interfere with the building of their government because, like Julianna said, it is a process of trial and error. If our nation is over involved, it could back fire on us later on if something goes wrong in Libya. However, due to Libya's huge amount of oil, the U.S. should take part in helping them, to create somewhat of a friendship. I think that the Libyan people should have most control in rebuilding their government, because after all, it is THEIR government. After being dictated for so long, they deserve to have the say-so in their government. However, if problems or concerns do arise, the NATO should be involved.
I think now that Gadhafi is gone, the country can at least relax from the terror but I think they should not take this fortunate event for granted and just celebrate. Now is the time for them to rebuild their country's government which will be very difficult and will take a long time which is why they should not waste anymore time before someone else takes over. I do not think we should necessarily be concerned, I think it would be good for Libya to have their own government, the people should have a voice. I definitely think we should help them but considering our economic turmoil, I do not think it is smart for the US to put billions of dollars in helping rebuild. We too are in need and we should help but not to the point where we are going to lose more money. I agree with Andi and think we should mainly stay out of it just in case a problem arises, they will not have us to blame for it and our country does not need any more problems.
I feel that Libya is going to be in for a long, hard journey concerning building up their government and stabilizing the country as a whole. I think they will be able to do it. It will be very tough and time consuming, but after some years I have faith that they will be able to get themselves back on track now that Gadhafi is gone. They all celebrated so much after his death and that is a definite sign that they were ready for his torment to be over and ready to start anew. Their leaders are stepping up and already starting to plan, even though they have a lot to plan. I think as long as the country is dedicated, they will be able to one day acheive a successful democracy. I think that the United States should be somewhat concerned as of right now because we do not know if people who supported Gadhafi will riot, yet I do not believe we should become very involved. Libya needs to learn how to survive on its own, with the exception of countrys' help every once in a while. Also, if we really got involved in another country's problems, that would be very bad because we do not have the money or men for it. We are already involved enough in other countrys' problems, we do not need to add Libya to the list.I feel that at first, the rebuilding efforts should be put in the hands of NATO, but once Libya proves to be somewhat stabilized, it should be able to take over from there. I have faith in Libya, as long as the people there are determined for change.
I think that the country of Libya is in for a tough time rebuilding an entire government. Even though the people of LIbya are celebrating Gadhafi's death, I don't think they truly realize that because they don't have any leader, it could become twice as worse when he was the ruler. For example, there will be a long period of chaos and unstableness in Libya's economy, which will probably take a while to repair. Therefore, I believe that the U.S should be concerned with helping them rebuild their government, but not completely take over, otherwise the people of Libya could get the wrong idea and another situation will follow. That being said, we should also send over medical help and make suggestions on how their government should run, but only suggest not put into action. I strongly feel that the rebuilding of Libya should be in the hands of the NATO because if everyone in Libya tried to help and push their ideas on how the government should be run, then another feud would break out and the system wouldn't be fair. Moreover, since the people there are still celebrating and are excited about their freedom, they might make irrational suggestions and choices from all the hype that's going on. However, the NATO should also consult with them first on how they feel about certain issues. Eventually when the country starts to gain stability, then they shouldn't interfere as much.
The country of Libya has finally experienced the death of Gadhafi. This is a huge turning point for the country of Libya because they can finally turn their government around. However, this is not going to be an easy task. They have to totally rebuild their government and try to make it as fair as possible. I am concerned that Libya is going to have many troubles with this and that they are going to have a long, hard future. Currently, Libya does not have many strong leaders. How are they supposed to get out of this mess without someone they can trust. In my opinion, I believe that we should be concerned with the revamping of their country. If it all works out for them, then great. However, there could be many bad outcomes at their attempts of revamping their country. Many people may not agree with how it is being made and could rebel. There are many road bumps that they could hit, and they are going to have to fight hard for what they want. On the other hand, I think that they are going to need a lot of help along the way, but not necessarily all from the United States. I believe that the United States should help them with many things like medical needs, however, like Julie said, I don’t believe the United States should be overly involved. If we become overly involved it might seem like we are trying to take over, and that is the last thing that Libya wants right now. Instead, I think that we should leave the rebuilding efforts in the hands of NATO. It would be way too irresponsible to leave the rebuilding efforts in the hands of the Libyan people themselves because you don’t necessarily know who you can trust. Overall, the best thing that we can do is to leave the rebuilding in the hands of NATO, where they have the power to responsibly rebuild Libya.
Libya's future has a long road ahead of it. Working towards a new government is not going to be an easy task for the NTC. The NTC has a very hard job of figuring out a good type of government that will work well for everyone and satisfy the people. While I understand celebration feels necessary, they need to start cracking down on what needs to be done next. Not only this, but they need to give the people help that are in desperate need/condition. I agree with Caroline that we should offer help and advice to them about government but in no way force it? However I feel that our country has enough of its own problems to deal with so we should not get too involved. We should help give assistance to those injured and desperate right now though. But, Libya needs to be able to take charge and learn to grow and prosper on their own. This country has a good future ahead if and only if they stay focused on what needs to be done now, work hard, and try to find a middle ground to try and make most of the people happy. The U.S. should be concerned because just as Maggie said they have a plentiful source of oil which our country needs. It is imperative that we maintain good ground with them. As for the NATO I feel they should step back and let the NTC take care of the situation. But, they should be available to step in if it is deemed necessary.
I am concerned for the future of Libya. They have a lot of damage to repair as a country, which will require help from other countries and organizations. I really think that the Libyan people should have the most control over the rebuilding efforts and that they will be a lot better off in the future if they take control over the rebuilding efforts now. Seeing as they do not have an organized government, some of the rebuilding efforts will have to fall to NATO and I think that that would be a good thing as long as NATO is just overseeing the rebuilding and not totally controlling it. As to the futures of their country, right now I don’t know how they are going to end up. Many countries around the world are concerned with the future of Libya and all of this help coming in could really boost Libya’s chances of getting back on their feet, but it could also be potentially harmful to and stunt the growth of Libya’s rebuilding efforts. However, I do think that much help is needed in Libya and that if a country is capable of providing effective help and relief to Libya, they should. So I basically think that Libya should be the ones that are in control right now and that countries that are able to help them should listen to what the people of Libya want accomplished and should assist them accordingly.
Now, I do think that we should be concerned with the future of Libya but I don’t know how much we should get involved with it. I would love to help out this country, especially now when they have the chance to get back on their feet as an independent nation. As a country, we obviously have a ton of problems too and getting involved with this project might not be the smartest thing that we could do, but my optimistic mind is thinking that maybe if we help this country in their time of need good things will come to us in return. Some people will probably disagree with this statement, and I don’t know how much truth it has too it, but we have such a serious amount of debt right now that I don’t think throwing another million into something is really going to make too much of a difference. But I really don’t know what we should do. Whatever Obama decides to do, I’m sure it will be in our country’s best interest.
Although Libya has been recently liberated, the citizens of this country as well as the nation as a whole still have many steps to take before they achieve stability, organized government, and a higher standard of living. I think that in the immediate future, Libya will probably struggle economically and with government organization, but I think that Libya’s role in the oil trade will allow them to be recognized by the world as an emerging nation that is worth trading with. I think that once Libya establishes a stable democratic government it will have the chance to become a more industrialized nation because of the economic gains made by its oil trade. I don’t think that we should be concerned about this country’s attempts to revamp their government because the people of this nation obviously realize that their previous government system did not create a good life for Libyan citizens, so this nation has most likely learned its lesson and will try to create a democracy according to the suggestion of NATO. The United States should help with rebuilding efforts in Libya because if we did not help than it would defeat the purpose of interfering in this nation’s affairs in the first place. We should not leave simply because Gadhafi was killed; in fact, Libyans need more help now than ever in rebuilding their country. I think that we should help to rebuild to a point, but I think that we should also allow Libya to work independently so that they learn how to be self-reliant. The rebuilding efforts should also be more in control of the Libyan people because they most learn how to function independently with their new system of government.
Though Gadhafi’s death was great for Libya, Libya's future remains in considerable doubt. President Obama authorized U.S. intervention in Libya without seeking congressional approval, which I find to be completely frustrating. We don’t need to act unilaterally in every instance where intervention is justified. And I guess Obama deserves partial credit for Libya's liberation. I do not think that the situation in Libya ever directly threatened America's vital interests, unless affronts to human rights generally can be said to challenge our security. I don’t think that Libya will require an American presence like the operation in Iraq. However, we should embrace progress in Libya and should seize any opportunity to help. While I do think that Libya should have some control while rebuilding, I feel like NATO should have the ultimate power.
The courntry of Lybia has gone through a lot in the past year. They should definately be happy that Gadhafi is gone. However, the real challenge is setting up and stabalizing a government system. The people in the country have been through a lot and their are probably a lot of different ideas that the new government has to consider. It is important that the people have a say in the government in order to revent history from repeating itself. I do think that the United States should be a little bit consider with the situation in Lybia. Forming a government can lead to disagreement and that can often result in fighting. Their has already been many people wounded from fighting in Lybia. If people are used to the environment of fighting thet may result to that whne something goes wrong with the new government. Also there are many resources in Lybia that the United States could use, soI think it is important for the United States to not overlook the situation and assist some of the wounded people and those who need the most help. I also believe that it is important that the people ste up their own governmental system because that would allow the country to be more indpendent and become a stronger country after what happened
I think Libya has a good shot. They want this change. It is not like they did not want Gadhafi gone. They didn't want to dictated anymore so they are happy that they can now move on with their lives and start a new government with equal rights for all people. I think that although it may be difficult for them to get the ball rolling, eventually over time it would become much easier. Things in politics don't just happen. People need to be ready to work for what they believe in. So if Libya wants to form a democracy, they are going to need to work hard to achieve their goals. I don't think the U.S. needs to be entirely concerned with this country and their success, but that does not mean we shouldn't help them if the ask or really need our help. People need to accept that the United States is a very powerful country whose job will always be to help insure democracy to all those who want it. However, the U.S. should only become involved if it is completely necessary. I think we should let Libya try on its own at first. If they don't try, how will they ever know if they could do it? If the U.S. helps too much it will be like they didn't earn their freedom, so why would they ever fight to keep it. I think in a true democracy the power must come directly from the people. The only for this to happen would be for the Libyan people to lead the rebuilding efforts. Otherwise the citizens will just take their freedom for granted and will not appreciate the wonderful things they have been given.
I think that the state of Libya is very questionable at this point. It is a step forward for the democracies of this world, to have succeeded in ousting the former dictator Moammar Gadhafi, however this action also creates a power vaccum that terrorist groups can use to their advantage. As we know Libya is a major oil distributor and very few countries have the quality of crude oil that many refineries around the world depend on. If a terrorist group were to gain control of the country, that could put them in a very formidable position, as they now have bargaining power. It is also a question of the military. If terrorists were to get a hold of the stock piles of weapons, especially RPGs and stinger missile, then there would be a clear and present danger to other countries around the world. If a terrorist group was able to gain control of the country, the United States, Great Britain and other democratic world powers would be in extreme danger of another 9/11 like strike. Therefore, I believe that we should be VERY concerned about this country's attempt to revamp their government because failure for them could cost us our livelihoods (no more oil) or in a worse case scenario, our lives. I think that the United States should very closely monitor Libya's progress and participate in helpful discussion, but I also think that this should be up to the UN to, if necessary, interfere with sport. We at the moment are involved in two wars, neither of which are being funded or aided but any of the countries in the European Union. If they believe that this country if worth sending their troops in, I believe that we should be able to decline because of the lack of support that they gave us when we went to war. Having said that, I think that the United State's involvement should be minimal, and only involving monetary or political help. We already are trying to fight two wars single-handedly and we do not need to enter into another one. Also, I believe that the rebuilding process, though monitored by NATO etc, should be primarily in the hands of the Liberians. If NATO were to go in and "take over" the country, then the people of Libya will never learn how to run their own country or deal with issues of that nature. It is imperative for this country to be able, not only to set up a democracy, but to sustain it.
